Accredited online schools

Students in Georgia have already gained exposure to online education through distance learning initiatives like Georgia Virtual School (GAVS), a program established in 2005 by the Office of Technology Services at the Georgia Department of Education. GAVS provides virtual, remote courses to students enrolled at the middle school and high school levels. The University System of Georgia also offers distance learning options at the collegiate level, with a network of 31 local academic institutions that provide online degrees and courses. This partnership, known as Georgia ONmyLINE, is continually adding new academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

When it comes to the cost of higher education, tuition rates have grown by 74.2% within five years at public institutions, substantially higher than the U.S. average increase of 42%. Unfortunately, state appropriations haven’t kept up with the hikes in tuition and decreased by 5.1% within the same time period. When it comes to future government funding for higher education, Georgia is currently transitioning to a performance-based model, which will begin in 2017. Some of the metrics that will factor into future funding include the number of degrees conferred, academic performance and the success of low-income students.
